Getting fiber installed at your home is straightforward, but it helps to know what's coming so you can prep. Here's the full picture.

Before the Install

Before the tech arrives:

• Confirm the appointment window — usually a 2-4 hour arrival window.
• Decide where the ONT will go. The ONT (Optical Network Terminal) is a small box mounted on a wall — typically in a garage, basement, or utility closet. It needs power and somewhere to land Ethernet.
• Clear the route. Move furniture or boxes away from the planned entry point and from where the ONT will be mounted.
• Make sure someone 18+ is home. Most ISPs require an adult to sign for the install.

What Happens During the Install

A typical residential fiber install takes 2-4 hours and includes:

1. Drop placement. The technician runs fiber from the street pedestal or pole to your home — buried, aerial, or through existing conduit.
2. Entry point. A small hole is drilled through an exterior wall and sealed weatherproof. The fiber enters the home.
3. ONT installation. The ONT is mounted on the wall, powered, and connected to the incoming fiber.
4. In-home wiring. Ethernet runs from the ONT to your router location — sometimes through existing structured wiring, sometimes a fresh pull.
5. Router setup. Your ISP-provided router is connected and provisioned.
6. Speed test and walkthrough. The tech verifies speeds, explains the equipment, and answers questions.

After the Install

Once the tech leaves:

• Test devices throughout the home to make sure WiFi reaches everywhere you need it. Mesh extenders may help for larger homes.
• Update bookmarked tools and smart-home devices that pointed to your old network's public IP if applicable.
• Keep the ONT powered. If the power goes out, internet (and any phone-over-fiber service) goes with it. Some installs include a battery backup.

Will my walls be damaged? No — a single small hole (about the diameter of a pencil) is drilled at the entry point and sealed.

Can I move the ONT later? Yes, but it's a service call. Pick a good location during the original install.

Do I need to keep my old modem/cable equipment? No. Return it to your previous provider to avoid rental fees.
